NEWS / Comments:

SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING Monday, 17 May

At the last Council Meeting on Monday, 10 May, the Council-adjusted school budget was to have been voted upon. Unfortunately, there was not a quorum present (Councillor Brennan and myself were not present), so a vote could not be taken.

A special Council meeting has been scheduled for this coming Monday, 17 May at 7:30 in Council chambers at Borough Hall to consider the school budget.

Work requirements have taken me out of town recently, so I have not been involved in Council considerations regarding the school budget. However, I was told officially that the Council school budget committee has decided to request that the Council pass the school budget as it was put before the voters (no changes), despite the fact that voters defeated the school budget in April.

I'm sorry that I will not be attending the special meeting - I will again be out of town because of work. But I urge all residents with an interest in the school budget to show up and make their feelings known, whether for or against passage of an unchanged school budget.

Website Updates Coming Once Again

A couple of months ago, the memory in my laptop video card began to fail.  After searching for a reasonably priced new card, I finally gave up and ordered a new laptop.

After spending a few weeks configuring the new laptop with new software, I'm starting to update the site again. Since I'm using new web authoring software, you may notice a few glitches as I learn how to use it. Please let me know about anything you do see, by e-mailing me at Mark@MABrunton.com.

My scanner is still offline, so any documents I have to scan (Final meeting agendas, etc.) will not be available for a few weeks. Meanwhile, the posted pre-meeting agendas will be used, then replaced later.

The Borough Purchase of 9 East Park Avenue

In December, Council approved the borough purchase of 9 East Park Avenue. That purchase was completed in mid-January.

Many residents have contacted me to discuss this purchase, asking for details of the deal, how it was handled at Council, and so forth. I wrote up a reasonably short explanation of the deal and how it was done by Council for those who may be interested. Included, of course, are my thoughts on the deal. Click on the title of this blurb to go to that write-up.

Leaf Pickup and The December 2009 Snowstorm

This past fall and early winter have been unusually difficult for the Department of Public Works, first because of the wet weather that interfered so significantly with leaf pickup, and second because of the unusually early and heavy snowfall on December 19th and 20th.

Click on the above link for background and explanation of what really happened. Part I, Leaf Pickup, is posted now. Information on the snowstorm will be posted over the next few days.

December 28 Council meeting

The upcoming Council meeting is the last meeting of the year. The agenda does not list all topics that will be discussed, or all business that will be conducted. The next meeting will be 4 January 2010 - the re-organization meeting. Items not on the agenda that will be coming up on the 28th may have significant impact on items that will appear on the annual reorganization meeting.

CLICK HERE FOR ARCHIVED NEWS AND COMMENTS

During his campaign for Council, Mark said he would post, on line, notes from Council meetings and explanations of ordinances and resolutions, as part of his commitment to open government. This site is where that information can be found.

On this site you will find Council meeting agendas, minutes, Mark's notes, and synopses of other non-private-session business conducted by the Council at Council meetings. These will be cataloged by the meeting date. A discussion and explanation of these items (as Mark sees them) is included when appropriate. Copies of ordinances and resolutions considered by the Council can also be found, through either numerically sorted lists, or through the meeting date where the ordinance / resolution was discussed.

Council assignments, contact information and such can be / will be found on other pages of this site. It will take awhile to add all that information - please be a little patient. If you need to know something right away, you can call Mark at 910-9919 and he'll be glad to give you the information directly.

You won't find a lot of community activities or news and such here - http://www.Merchantville.com does a very good job with those things and more. You also won't see information on deadlines for things like animal licenses, tax due dates, etc. For those too, see http://www.Merchantville.com.

Also, you may find this site to be rather "plain Jane." It's purpose is not to impress with flashy graphics or clever layouts and "cool" navigation tricks - it's purpose is simply to provide a location to find information on what your borough government is doing.

One more thing - Information on this site should not be considered to be any sort of official record. Copies of ordinances and resolutions will generally be unsigned, minutes may or may not be approved (though they will say if they are draft or final), etc. Official documentation can be obtained at Borough Hall.

If there is any other information you'd like to see on the site, or if you have questions about anything you see here, e-mail Mark at Mark@MABrunton.com.

A Message from Mark -

To all residents of our fine community:

I have every intention of serving in the ways I spoke and wrote about during the campaign. Over the next several years, I hope to accomplish all the things I said in my literature. If you ever feel that I'm not living up to my end of that bargain, let me know, firmly and loudly! Come to a Council meeting to make your voice heard, call me at 910-9919 (not after 10 pm unless it's an emergency, please!), or e-mail me at Mark@MABrunton.com. However you choose to contact me, I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Please make sure I DO hear from you. While walking around town knocking on doors during my election campaign, I asked all those I met what their biggest concerns in town were. I listened then, and I'll continue to do so. Priorities change over time, and I missed many folks when I was campaigning. So make sure I hear your concerns, especially if I haven't yet heard them, or if they change.

I said in the campaign that Merchantville belongs to ALL of us, so where it goes in the future should be up to ALL of us. Make sure the Council hears YOUR desires for the future of Merchantville.

In closing, if you have something you'd like to share with Council but can't make the meetings, fill me in and I'll be your messenger.
